What if politicians actually had to compete for your vote?
I sat down with Danielle Allen, head of the Coalition for a Healthy Democracy, to discuss Massachusetts Question 3 and the push to replace traditional party primaries with an all-party primary where the top two candidates advance to November.
We talked about Massachusetts’ lack of competitive elections, why both party establishments have opposed the reform, concerns from progressives and conservatives, money in politics, and why Allen argues that candidates should have to build broad coalitions rather than simply win their faction of a party.
As Danielle put it: strong parties shouldn’t fear voters.
